Pan Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to allow state governments implement the planned establishment of National Forest Guard. It said allowing them to implement the policy would be part of the decentralisation of the country’s security architecture. This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of Afenifere caucus meeting held at the Akure home of its leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

Angry farmers yesterday stormed the streets of Akure, the Ondo State capital to protest the killing of four farmers by gunmen suspected to be herdmen. Bodies of the victims were dumped on the streets adjacent to the Governor’s Office by the protesters. The farmers were said to have been killed in the morning at Thirteen-Thirteen Farming Settlement at Ajagbusi, Ala Elefosan in Akure North Local Government Area.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has issued a directive to illegal farmers to vacate farmlands consessioned to investors in the state, especially SAO Agro. He promised to provide farmland for the displaced illegal farmers. Aiyedatiwa spoke when he visited SAO Agro, the lead investor developing Ondo Special Agro Processing Zone in Ore, Odigbo Local Government. He said his administration was committed to supporting large-scale agribusinesses.

An Ondo State High Court has barred the state government from evicting farmers from the 10,000 hectares Oluwa Forest Reserve. It said there was need to preserve economic trees such as cocoa, kola nut, and palm trees that constituted the farmers’ livelihoods. Ondo State Government had relied on an order of injunction granted by a customary court to ask farmers and Sao Capital Ltd from further entering into the forest reserve.
