Following a busy week of crime on campus, police at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln reported a slight decrease in crime in the past week. Officers are investigating another case of sextortion, a crime UNL Police Department Assistant Chief Marty Fehringer said is unfortunately frequently reported on campus. Sextortion is a crime that occurs when someone threatens to distribute explicit photos if a victim doesn’t provide them with money.

As the spring semester hits full bloom, so has crime across the campus at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. UNL Police Department Assistant Chief Marty Fehringer said that in the last few weeks, crime across campus was slightly higher, but full of typical offenses like underage drinking, fake IDs, hit and runs, and driving under the influence. Officers arrested 21-year-old Cale Wacker of Norfolk Thursday, April 3 in relation to a hate crime against a student.

Since The United States Department of Education issued a letter Feb. 14, effectively banning programs related to diversity, equity and inclusion on college campuses, students and faculty are left questioning exactly what these bans will affect. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s University Programing Council President Nancy Tran said the student-run organization will not be changing its dedication or approach to diversity on campus amidst federal policy changes.

UNLPD Assistant Chief Marty Fehringer said the University of Nebraska-Lincoln saw a slight rise in crimes over the past two weeks, which he said is consistent yearly with the rise in temperatures. An officer saw a man littering, throwing a bottle on the sidewalk, Monday, March 10 at 14th and P Streets, and stopped his car to intervene.

Imagine, a student reversing out of their spot in the Abel parking garage, moved too close to the car next to them and accidentally scraped the side of the vehicle. After doing this, the panicked student had two options: leave a note with their contact information or leave quickly and hope no one noticed. This is a situation many students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln find themselves in, according to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police Department Capt. Aaron Pembleton.
