1. Introduction Stroke is caused by cerebral vascular occlusion or hemorrhage. Among all cerebral strokes, acute ischemic stroke (AIS) has the highest incidence (~87%). Currently, AIS is the leading cause of disability and the second most common cause of death worldwide. In the United States, a new stroke occurs every 40 s on average (1).
