To the Editor:We read with interest the editorial “Clinical remission with biologic therapies in severe asthma: a matter of definition” [1]. We absolutely agree that the definition of clinical remission is of critical importance, and as with rheumatology, gastroenterology and dermatology, this is likely to be an iterative process.

IntroductionAsthma is a heterogenous disease of the airways characterised by variable airways hyperresponsiveness and chronic inflammation. It is estimated that 5–10% of asthmatic patients have “severe asthma”, defined by the European Respiratory Society (ERS)/American Thoracic Society (ATS) as “asthma which requires treatment with Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) step 4–5 treatment or oral corticosteroids (OCS) for 50% of the last year to prevent it becoming uncontrolled” (see ) [1, 2].
