In another demonstration that the fight for LGBTQ rights in India goes far beyond marriage, a dispute in a Reliance Fresh supermarket in the posh South Kolkata neighbourhood of Jodhpur Park suddenly assumed a sinister character on 11 February. What started as an argument over a place in line became a mob assault outside the store. Members of Sappho for Equality who were initially involved or arrived to assist were verbally, physically, and sexually assaulted.

The statement given by the President in the Parliament, which is called the President’s address, is not written by her. This statement is written by the ruling party which she represents. Therefore, when she addresses the Parliament by saying “my government” in her speech and praises the government, then she herself becomes responsible for the pronunciation of every word written in that speech and its wrong facts.

As I open my email in the morning, usually the CC newsletter is there in my inbox unless there is some technical glitch which results in no delivery. I tend to open it first by overlooking all the other emails. Looking through the CC newsletter first thing has become part of my daily routine, and it feels great to see what my editor has put together for the day. It was never a good look. Advertised as the world’s largest, complex and most colourful of democracies, India’s approach to certain dissidents, notably of a Sikh patriotic sensibility, has not quite matched its lofty standing. People’s Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR) mourns the death of activist, teacher and poet GN Saibaba and condemns the state’s role in contributing to his early demise at the age of 57. Of the ten years since his arrest in May 2014 Saibaba spent over eight years in jail in a fabricated case under UAPA. He, and the five other convicted in the same case in 2017, had to be acquitted twice over before being released in March 2024.

Professor G.N. Saibaba’s passing is an immense loss to the Indian democratic movement. He was one of the most courageous and intellectually sharp voices against the proto-fascism that he himself fell victim to. My encounters with him remain etched in my heart, as he carved a permanent niche among the crusaders for the emancipation of mankind. Saibaba represented the criminalization and terror faced by those who champion the cause of the oppressed.

Social justice activists came together on Sunday, October 13 at Holland Park in Surrey to raise their voices against the death of a former Delhi university Professor in India. GN Saibaba passed away following health issues that worsened because of inhuman treatment in jail. A human rights defender, who stood up for the rights of the poor and marginalized, including the indigenous peoples of India, Saibaba was branded as a sympathizer of Maoist insurgents before being thrown behind bars.
