The Cary Park District will host its annual Holiday Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at the community center, 255 Briargate Road in Cary. The event is free and open to the public. Come in and shop the one-of-a-kind items offered by local crafters and many popular vendors. Spaces are available to sell crafts and other products at the fair. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. No food or drink for immediate consumption may be sold.

The Zonta Club of Streator will be collecting items for Safe Journeys, which is formerly A Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Service, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Westgate Plaza Dollar General, 222 Pratt St.The Zonta Club will hand out lists of suggested items to purchase. Monetary donations also will be appreciated, the club said.

More than 40 scarecrows were created by families, businesses and organizations and on display Saturday for the Ottawa Scarecrow Festival. Winners were named in five different categories. Additionally, Lowe Maintenance won the inaugural Battle the Buffalo Chili competition.

Community High School District 99 will celebrate Red Ribbon Week welcoming back former NBA player and youth advocate Chris Herren as part of the week’s events. As a young man, Herren achieved his dream of playing basketball in the NBA, only to lose that dream and nearly his life and family due to alcohol and drug addiction. Now in recovery and sober since 2008, Herren has made it a mission to share his story and educate students and families on the serious risks of underage drinking and drug use.

DeKALB – AARP Tax-Aide is seeking DeKalb, Sycamore, and LaSalle area volunteers for the 2024 tax season. The tax season will be held from Feb. 1 through April 15, according to a news release. The training is free and open to the public. The training is available through in-person and online programs. Volunteer opportunities include preparing tax returns, helping with set-up and tear-down at AARP’s Sycamore site, and greeting at the DeKalb Public Library.

After several quiet weeks in movie theaters, four films entered wide release over the weekend. “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie” came out the top dog, with $23 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. The performances of all four films – “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” “Saw X,” “The Creator” and “Dumb Money” – told a familiar story at the box office. What worked? Horror and animated franchises. What didn’t? Originality and comedy.

DeKALB – Safe Passage will host two annual candlelight vigils, one Monday in DeKalb and one Oct. 11 in Sandwich, in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The vigils will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St., DeKalb, and from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Sandwich Public Library, 925 S. Main St., Sandwich, according to a news release. The vigils are free and open to the public. The vigils also will feature a survivor-made art project and a survivor speak-out.

DeKALB – The Kishwaukee Concert Band will open its 22nd season with a concert directed by Deb Shofner and Dave Lehman. The concert will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 8 in the Boutell Concert Hall at the Northern Illinois University Music Building, 550 Lucinda Ave., DeKalb, according to a news release. The concert is free and handicapped accessible. Parking is available in lots three, four, and 14.
