Monday evening, in his first virtual USHJA Town Hall since assuming the role of president in April, Britt McCormick took time to discuss how the U.S. Hunter Jumper Association functions and how he hopes to move the organization forward in his presidency. “One of the first things that I wanted to do is kind of look under the hood of the USHJA on the business side and just take a look at what we’re doing,” he said.

Meet Capture The Magic (Uncaptured—Magical Holiday, Speightstown), known around the barn as “Houdini,” a beautiful dark bay, appearing black, 4-year-old stallion.

I’m the mom who made her daughter’s riding about me. I’ll admit it. Thankfully, my daughter’s trainer wasn’t afraid to call me out. Two years ago, I witnessed my daughter’s ongoing battle to ride her pony. We switched barns and found a new trainer. Even though we found a better situation, seeing my daughter struggle brought on waves of sadness that I couldn’t stuff down. This new trainer had a no-nonsense, can-do attitude, and though she listened, she pushed me to reconsider my position.

Thermal, Calif.—March 8In the second week in February, Nick Haness rode West Coast Equine Partners’ Cavaletto Loma Z in the $49,900 USHJA International Hunter Derby and things didn’t go too well. They started out strong, with “Cavaletto” finishing second in the classic round, but when he slipped on the grass field in Round 2, Haness opted to retire and save him for another day.

Sometimes my team and I are really rolling, with lots of horses and humans showing and getting somewhere and grinding it out. Other times, the youngsters are all youngstering, and I didn’t book a lot of clinics in January and February because the weather usually stinks, and we’re mostly just logging miles and waiting for something to happen. This is one of those times.
