Pam Marino here, reflecting on my time at the Lead Me Home Summit on Homelessness that took place yesterday, April 17, in Salinas, organized by the Coalition of Homeless Services Providers. More than 300 people were gathered inside the CSUMB Salinas City Center for a full day of speakers and workshops, all geared toward decreasing homelessness in Monterey and San Benito counties.

Pam Marino here, thinking a lot about my grandfather, Paul Hamilton, these days. A classic member of the Greatest Generation, he spent most of his adult life serving his country, including in two World Wars. In WWII he spent four years in Europe, earning a Purple Heart after sustaining a serious battle injury near the end of the war.

After about six years and multiple delays in attempting to get a 13,000-square-feet multi-use project built near 7th Avenue and Dolores Street in Carmel, Monaco-based developer Patrice Pastor finally cleared a major hurdle on April 9: a 4-0 approval of the project by the Carmel Planning Commission. For some projects that might be all that’s needed to move forward. For a project as controversial as Pastor’s, it’s likely it will face an appeal, delaying the project even further.

Will the butterflies ever find a place to land? Pam Marino here, with an update on the monarch butterfly stained glass window that local developer Nader Agha wants to donate to the City of Pacific Grove. There’s a bit of a showdown tomorrow tonight at the P.G. City Council meeting over the window’s fate. Last October I reported on Agha’s attempt to donate the window he designed himself, that once adorned a half-moon-shaped window space at the Holman Building, which Agha once owned.

I highly recommend The Penguin Lessons. Especially in this precarious time we live in, here in the U.S.
