Winter is only a few months away. At my library in a seaside community sixty miles south of Boston, one welcome distraction from the plummeting temperatures is our very own award program: the Quahog Book Award, named for the local mollusk. It encourages third-through sixth-grade children to read popular literature and pick their favorites from a list of nominated titles.

News literacy is the ability to determine the credibility of news and other information using the standards of quality journalism. It involves “thinking like a journalist” to determine what information to trust, share, and act on. News literacy teaches people how to think critically about timely issues and sources of information, not what to think. It helps foster healthy skepticism while avoiding cynical distrust of all news and information.

While it has been two years since relinquishing the Horn Book editorship, and two more since getting to work meant going to work, I dream almost every night about being back in the office. Recently, identical twins dressed like Stanley Kubrick’s came to visit me there. A few weeks ago, I became incensed when word came down from management that I had to plug a sweepstakes promotion right smack in the middle of the review I was writing.

Lois Ehlert (1934–2021) and I first met when I was twenty-four and an editorial assistant at Harcourt Brace Jovanovich (HBJ) in San Diego. We went on to work together for thirty-five years, and we made twenty-nine books. Lois had a fondness for nicknames, and while we were working on one of our earliest picture books, Feathers for Lunch, she learned that I had been a birder since I was a girl, so she started calling me Tweeter.
