Once a country known for anti-nuclear sentiment, Sweden has done an about-turn, providing effective financing mechanisms and regulatory frameworks designed to foster new nuclear builds. John Ahlberg, Founder of nuclear scale-up Kärnfull, believes the country is indeed positioning itself to be a leader in nuclear development. “I think Sweden has the appetite to become the silver bullet in the European Union on how to build new nuclear,” says Ahlberg.

Climate Fund Managers (CFM) and Ivorian independent power producer Société Des Energies Nouvelles have signed a $3 million funding agreement to co-develop the Divo Biomass Project in Côte d’Ivoire. The 76MW Divo Biomass Project, said to be the world’s first grid-connected cocoa waste-to-energy power plant, is being developed as a public-private partnership. Once complete, the plant will convert 600,000 tonnes of agricultural waste annually into baseload electricity for the national grid.

US energy company Constellation has signed a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Meta for 1,121MW of nuclear energy. The power will be supplied from June 2027 from the Clinton Clean Energy Center, located in the US state of Illinois, supporting the nuclear facility’s relicensing and continued operations for the next two decades.

Swedish clean tech company Plagazi AB has been awarded a €29.5 million ($34 million) grant from the EU Innovation Fund for its Gävle Circular Park project. Gävle Circular Park, located in the Gävle Municipality in Sweden, will annually produce 12,000 tonnes of circular hydrogen from 66,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste and provide the municipality with 10MW of district heating.
