    Rolls-Royce SMR has been selected as the preferred bidder to develop small modular reactors (SMRs) in the UK. The UK-based company was selected by Great British Energy – Nuclear (formerly Great British Nuclear) to design and build SMRs, which the UK government says are smaller and quicker to build than traditional nuclear plants.     The UK government has announced a £14.2 billion ($19.1 billion) investment to build the Sizewell C nuclear power plant. The facility is being built in East Suffolk, located next to Sizewell B, which started operating in 1995. Sizewell C will replicate the design and operation of Hinkley Point C in Somerset, generating up to 3.2GW of power, enough to power six million homes.

    Climate Fund Managers (CFM) and Ivorian independent power producer Société Des Energies Nouvelles have signed a $3 million funding agreement to co-develop the Divo Biomass Project in Côte d’Ivoire. The 76MW Divo Biomass Project, said to be the world’s first grid-connected cocoa waste-to-energy power plant, is being developed as a public-private partnership. Once complete, the plant will convert 600,000 tonnes of agricultural waste annually into baseload electricity for the national grid.

    A strong decline in fossil fuel use has been observed in the EU district heating and cooling sector, driven by increasing rates of electrification and waste heat, according to Euroheat & Power’s latest DHC Market Outlook. According to the report, released today during the association’s Euroheat & Power Congress, for the first time, fossil fuels in the sector have declined significantly, with the contribution of coal and natural gas down respectively by 12.3% and 3.7%.
