    GLOBAL interest rates peaked sometime in the second half of financial year 2024 (2H24), and with key inflation indicators beginning to trend lower, central banks have turned dovish by lowering their benchmark interest rates. Over the past year, other than Malaysia and Vietnam, most central banks have cut rates, with the Bank of Canada and Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) being the most aggressive – each lowering key rates by as much as 225 basis points (bps).     THE question of whether Hong Kong (HK) should de-peg its currency against the US dollar (USD) has been a subject of debate for a long time. The recent dollar weakness and intervention by the HK Monetary Authority (HKMA) to maintain the peg suggest that it is time for HK to de-peg. The HK$7.80 peg and within a tight band of between 7.75 and 7.85 to the dollar was established in 1983 under a linked exchange rate system.

    THE US Federal Reserve (Fed), especially its chair Jerome Powell, has come under increasing pressure from US President Donald Trump to cut the benchmark Fed Fund Rate (FFR). While Powell has categorically expressed that he will stay on until his term expires in May next year, the president is just fed up with Powell due to his lack of action in cutting the FFR and has called Powell all sorts of names.
