Here the architect João Gameiro and his studio have restored an old apartment to its legitimate splendour, as testimony to the exquisite craftsmanship of another age.

Like a cabane de plage or beach hut, those “small but colourful shelters from which you emerge into the sun and sky.” That is the look which the architect Manuelle Gautrand from Marseille, now that her children have gone their own way, wanted for the 115-square-metre duplex apartment in the Marais in which she has been living since the early 2000s, at the top of a building dating from the 17th century.

The house in the countryside where the whole family can get together, including the children and grandchildren, has become at our antipodes a real experiment in living with nature. Dune House, designed for a retired couple by the studio of Lance and Nicola Herbst on the east coast of New Zealand, around two hours’ drive from Auckland. “It is conceived for two people, but on the property there are two other structures, one for each of the children and their families,” explains Nicola Herbst.

An ‘antique’ structure according to the Workshop diseño y construcción studio that carried out its rehabilitation – perhaps less ‘antique’ for us, given that it dates from the early 20th century – Casa Pakaal stands in the central Santiago district of Mérida, capital of the Yucatán, in southern Mexico. “It is the second biggest historic centre in the country, filled with lots and buildings that need to be reappraised,” says Francisco Bernés, who founded the practice with Fabián Gutiérrez in 2014.
