Keep Pasco Beautiful sponsored the county’s 30th Earth Day celebration at the park.

NEW PORT RICHEY — Shadow, a black German shepherd who joined the New Port Richey Police Department in 2014, was retired with honors at a ceremony April 25 at Peace Hall in Sims Park. The hall was filled with officers from the NPRPD; the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, which trains the city’s K-9 police; and officials such as City Manager Debbie Manns. They all praised the dog for his faithful service. The department now has four K-9 officers.

TRINITY — “The Music She Heard in Paris” tells the story of Alaina, a widowed American mother who finds love in the City of Light. When Gina Schulaski, who teaches English at J.W. Mitchell High School, wrote the book, she surprised herself by becoming a fiction writ-er, something she had never planned. Now, with the publication of “Love’s First Melody,” a prequel to “The Music She Heard in Par-is,” she’s proving that she is not a one-hit wonder.

TRINITY — A group of preschoolers at Dayspring Academy sit in a circle on the floor as Sydney Dufort reads from a storybook and shows them the pictures. Some listen quietly, some offer commentary. They all love it when the “big people” show them attention, according to Barbara Naporano, the school’s director. Dufort is a member of the National English Honor Society at J.W. Mitchell High School. She visits Dayspring with Gina Schulaski, a Mitchell High English teacher and adviser to the club.

PORT RICHEY — In the wake of Matthew Coppler’s resignation as city manager, and the need to find — and fund — an interim replacement, a new member of the City Council broached the city changing its form of government to a strong-mayor model. Chris Maher, whose candidacy was supported by Mayor John Eric Hoover, was sworn into his first City Council term prior to the council’s regular meeting April 22. Port Richey currently has a city manager form of government.
