When Maulty Moore graduated from historic Moton High School in 1964, his plan was to be a migrant farm worker. For nearly two years he traveled the East Coast wherever the work took him, picking cucumbers, tomatoes, apples and citrus. Growing up in rural Brooksville in the 1950s and ’60s, few Black youth dreamed of much more than what they had seen their parents do. His mother was a domestic worker who cooked, cleaned, ironed and cared for prominent families.

DADE CITY — Hundreds of runners and participants came out to the fourth annual Stomp Out Suicide Trail Run, hosted by the Pasco County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department at Withlacoochee River Park on May 3. The run was started five years ago as part of the department’s “RECreate Your Mind” initiative, which hosts events to shed light on this often-stigmatized topic.

NEW PORT RICHEY — Shadow, a black German shepherd who joined the New Port Richey Police Department in 2014, was retired with honors at a ceremony April 25 at Peace Hall in Sims Park. The hall was filled with officers from the NPRPD; the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, which trains the city’s K-9 police; and officials such as City Manager Debbie Manns. They all praised the dog for his faithful service. The department now has four K-9 officers.
