Not long ago, I drove to Colorado and Wyoming to visit family members I hadn't seen in a few years. It was mostly a social visit, although I've been working on the family history and genealogy and wanted to gather more information. I figured politics might come up. We may share genes, but we don't share political beliefs. Still, I was curious about what they were thinking and why. My cousins and I are pretty different people. I was the first on both sides to go to college.

Kevin Hendricks, a seasoned veteran of Albuquerque metro area newsrooms, has been appointed as the editor of The Sandoval Signpost, Corrales Comment and The Independent News. Hendricks has spent the past 17+ years working in newsrooms with the Albuquerque Journal and Rio Rancho Observer. Hendricks was born and raised in Albuquerque and has lived in Rio Rancho since 2019. He'll be leading a newsroom team covering Sandoval County, Corrales and the East Mountains as a part of the Ctrl+P Publishing.

The Paper. was founded in the middle of the pandemic by many of the former staff of the former Weekly Alibi. Through COVID, it grew quickly to become the city’s free digital news source for stories of perseverance and recovery. Post-pandemic, The Paper. expanded weekly print and digital distribution as our city’s arts, culture and events returned. Today, The Paper. enjoys the city’s highest email readership (over 50,000 subscribers strong) and an audited weekly print circulation of over 20,000.

Commentary by Pat Davis, City DeskPat Davis is a former Albuquerque City Councilor. He is the publisher of City Desk ABQ and owner/publisher of a group of newspapers in Central New Mexico. It has been just over five months since we launched City Desk ABQ, the city’s new nonprofit news publication. To date, the web counters at Wordpress and Google tell us that over 190,000 visitors have learned something about our city from our newsroom.
