Commentary by Pat Davis, City DeskPat Davis is a former Albuquerque City Councilor. He is the publisher of City Desk ABQ and owner/publisher of a group of newspapers in Central New Mexico. It has been just over five months since we launched City Desk ABQ, the city’s new nonprofit news publication. To date, the web counters at Wordpress and Google tell us that over 190,000 visitors have learned something about our city from our newsroom.

Shoppers outside a West Central Walgreens got a vision of old-fashioned wild west law enforcement last week. Officers from APD’s horse-mounted unit were on patrol near Coors and Central on March 20 when an employee of a nearby Walgreens alerted them to a man who had just shoplifted from the store. Three officers (and their horses) quickly gave chase and thanks to the officer’s body camera viewers can go along for the wild ride.

Commentary by Pat Davis, City DeskThe website mannyforsenate.com still promotes Manny Gonzales III’s one-month campaign as a Republican candidate for US Senate in Washington D.C. The campaign Facebook page he used last month to announce his failure to qualify for that race still bears the URL ending in “MannyforABQ,” an apparent holdover from his failed 2021 run as a Democrat to be mayor in Albuquerque.

Tonight, President Joe Biden will give one of the most important speeches of his political career in front of a joint session of Congress. The annual speech gives the president the chance to highlight his accomplishments from the last year and lay out his vision for the next. This year, however, Biden will also take the dais facing a tough reelection environment exacerbated by questions about his age and public perceptions about rising inflation in an otherwise booming economy.
