    By Pat Kenny During the Second World War, an Irish priest saved the lives of 6,500 prisoners. His headquarters was inside the German College next to St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, likened to the Irish Schindler, or a Michael Collins, remains a largely unsung hero despite his fearless defiance of the Third Reich. Saving countless lives, he provided sanctuary in the most unlikely of places: flats, farms, convents and monasteries.

    This will be the first in an annual lecture series, named to honour the momory of the late,great and beloved broadcaster Gay Byrne, whose anniversary is on the 4th of November. The Keynote speaker will be Moya Doherty, former chair of our national broadcaster RTÉ, and the moderator will be Pat Kenny, the well-known broadcaster and journalist now of Newstalk, and who had succeeded Gay as host of the longest running chat show in the world, the Late Late Show.
