HARRY MAGUIRE SECURED one of the most jaw-dropping European wins in Old Trafford’s long history as Manchester United came back to secure a scarcely believable 5-4 extra-time win against 10-man Lyon and reach the Europa League semi-finals. There was no room for error as the Red Devils’ 14th place in the Premier League standings meant a first European defeat of the campaign would end their hopes of saving a miserable season with silverware and continental qualification.

SINN FÉIN IS again the most popular party in the country, according to a new opinion poll, which also showed public displeasure with the government’s deal with Michael Lowry’s Regional Independents. The Irish Times/Ipsos B&A opinion poll has also recorded a sharp drop in support for Fine Gael since the previous poll taken before the last general election, with the party dropping to 16% support. This is the lowest level of support Fine Gael has had in this series of polls for over 30 years.

IRELAND IS SET to plunge into a spell of increasingly “unsettled” weather, Met Éireann has said, with heavy rain and flooding possible over the next few days. Last night, a Status Yellow rain warning was issued for counties Cork and Kerry, with spells of heavy rain forecast. It will come into effect at 11pm tonight and remain in place until noon on Friday. Met Éireann warned that there is a possibility of localised flooding in both counties tomorrow as a result of the rain.

GAZA’S CIVIL DEFENCE agency has reported that a wave of Israeli air strikes hit multiple encampments for displaced Palestinians across the territory, killing at least 25 people. Agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal said an overnight strike targeted several tents in the Al-Mawasi area of the southern city of Khan Yunis, resulting in 16 deaths.

ASTRONOMERS HAVE ANNOUNCED that they detected the most promising “hints” of potential life on a planet beyond our solar system. There has been vigorous debate in scientific circles about whether the planet K2-18b, which is 124 light years away in the Leo constellation, could be an ocean world capable of hosting microbial life.
