TREATING COLD SORES with anti-viral medicines could help slash the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, research suggests. Previous studies have found that the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) can lie dormant in human cells for a lifetime before “re-awakening”, leading to dementia symptoms. Experts have discovered that HSV-1 causes changes that resemble those in the brains of dementia patients, such as amyloid plaque-like formations and inflammation.

US PRESIDENT DONALD Trump has announced the concept he wants for his future Golden Dome missile defence programme – a multilayered $175 billion system that for the first time will put US weapons in space. Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said he expects the system will be “fully operational before the end of my term”, which ends in 2029, and have the capability of intercepting missiles “even if they are launched from space”.

OVER 80% OF badgers culled by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) tested negative for TB, The Journal Investigates can reveal. Figures obtained via DAFM post-mortem reports show that of the 10,301 culled badgers submitted for testing in the last five years, 8,211 were found to be clear of mycobacterium bovis – the bacteria that causes bovine tuberculosis (bTB).

GEORGE WENDT, WHO who played the affable, beer-loving barfly Norm on the hit 1980s TV comedy Cheers and later crafted a stage career that took him to Broadway in Art, Hairspray and Elf, has died. He was 76. Wendt’s family said he died early on Tuesday morning, peacefully in his sleep while at home, according to the publicity firm The Agency Group. “George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,” the family said in a statement.
