    JUSTICE MINISTER JIM O’Callaghan has said stressed that “securing our borders” is a government priority as he confirmed that 39 people were deported to Georgia on a charter flight last night. The minister has said that the deportation is classified as an “enforced removal” because the individuals had not complied with deportation orders. “Before a deportation order is made, the person is offered assistance to return home voluntarily, this is the preferred option.

    CARDINALS MET IN The Vatican this morning to discuss a date for the conclave to elect a new Pope. Dozens of cardinals met at 9am this morning (8am Irish time) with speculation growing that the secret ballot process will begin next Monday, after the end of a nine-day mourning period following the death of Pope Francis. All 252 cardinals were called to Rome following the death of Pope Francis on 21 April but just 135 of the group are areg under 80 and therefore are eligible to vote.

    Ten suspects go on trial in Paris today over the 2016 robbery of the US celebrity Kim Kardashian, which saw some $10 million worth of jewellery stolen from the reality TV star and influencer. Kardashian, now 44 — who left Paris traumatised hours after the robbery on the night of October 2-3, 2016 — is due to testify at the trial on May 13 in a court appearance that will be a major event in itself.

    CROSS-BORDER CO-OPERATION in key areas identified by the Good Friday Agreement has not met its full potential, according to a report. The latest ESRI-Shared Island report also identifies a number of areas around employment, childcare, and education. The Good Friday Agreement established a framework for formal cross-border co-operation on the island, creating six North-South bodies under the North South Ministerial Council.

    A STATUTORY MAXIMUM working temperature is among extreme-weather proposals being put forward by a union. Unite is seeking a meeting with Enterprise Minister Peter Burke to discuss its proposals, which also include four days’ paid “climate leave” if conditions render travel hazardous or workers need to address pressing domestic needs resulting from extreme weather. The union says a maximum working temperature should be set depending on the type of work and the working environment.
