According to an order filed on Thursday, U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. ruled that for anyone in the district who is designated by the federal government as an “alien enemy,” the administration is “enjoined from transferring, relocating, deporting, or removing such person outside of the Southern District of Texas, without an Order from the court.” Rodriguez’s order is set to expire May 2. Similar restraining orders have been issued in other districts nationwide.

Some Houston ISD parents say their children were presented with standardized tests even though they had opted out of taking them. HISD parents and some in surrounding school districts are participating in a boycott against the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness test, or STAAR test, which is being administered this spring. A similar boycott happened last year, which organizers at the time said was to protest the ongoing takeover of HISD by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).

Federal immigration enforcement officers are performing welfare checks at the homes of unaccompanied children in the Houston area and nationwide. Alexa Sendukas, managing attorney for the Galveston-Houston Immigrant Representation Project (GHIRP), said last week there had been five such visits with some of its clients.
