French Prime minister François Bayrou has told the French Parliament he wants political talks for New Caledonia to resume this month. In his maiden speech of general policy announcing his government's roadmap, in front of France's National Assembly (Lower House) in Paris, Bayrou said he wanted political talks on New Caledonia's political future to resume this month and come to a conclusion before the end of March.

New Caledonia's mothballed nickel plant, Koniambo nickel (KNS) has appointed a new chairman in early January. He is Alexandre Rousseau, who was until now the company's vice-president. The company said in a release he replaces Neil Meadows, who has held the position for the past three years. Rousseau has been with the company for the past 15 years.

New Caledonia's newly-installed government has elected pro-France Alcide Ponga as its President. Ponga, 49, is also the first indigenous Kanak president of the pro-France Le Rassemblement-Les Républicains (LR) party. His election came after the first attempt to elect a President, on Tuesday, failed to bring out a sufficient majority within the 11-member cabinet. On Wednesday, during a meeting convened by the French High Commission, Ponga received the support of six of the 11 government members.

New Caledonia's Congress on Tuesday elected its 18th government, but heavy horse-trading goes on behind the scenes to choose who will be the new President of the French Pacific territory's executive. Under a "collegial" system of proportional representation, the new government team reflects the make-up of the 54-seat Congress and, just like the previous one, consists of eleven members.

As French Prime Minister Michel Barnier's government has fallen to a motion of no confidence just three months after coming to office, New Caledonia is among the major victims of France's ongoing political instability. New Caledonia's post-riots situation was already difficult, with an economy on its knees and an estimated €2.2 billion in damages because of the burning and looting that erupted on 13 May.
