Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has survived a motion of no confidence against him in parliament. During the proceedings, livestreamed on EMTV, Speaker Job Pomat announced the results of the vote as 16 votes in favour and 89 against. In moving the motion, the member for Abau Sir Puka Temu nominated Sir Peter Ipatas as an alternative prime minister to Marape, and said the motion was moved on principle.

Last week, Rabuka fell short in his efforts to secure the support of three-quarters of the members of Parliament to amend sections 159 and 160 of the constitution. The prime minister’s proposed amendments also sought to remove the need for a national referendum altogether.
