    Bishop David A. Zubik, who has led the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh since 2007, is stepping down. The newly installed Pope Leo XIV has appointed Auxiliary Bishop Mark A. Eckman to fill the role. Eckman will be the 13th bishop of the Pittsburgh diocese. Zubik reached age 75 last September, the mandatory retirement age in the church. Eckman has served as auxiliary bishop in the diocese since 2022. He will be installed July 14, 2025, during a mass at Saint Paul Cathedral in Oakland.

    The city of Pittsburgh closed the Herron Avenue Bridge this morning at 8 a.m., due to safety concerns flagged in a recent inspection. "Following emergent findings from the City's bridge inspection consultant and PennDOT, we are moving quickly to close the Herron Avenue Bridge in the interest of public safety," said Zack Workman, the acting chief engineer for the city's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure. All traffic will be detoured via the Bloomfield Bridge.

Allegheny County voters, meanwhile, will vote on two Council races, along with candidates for the county's Court of Common Pleas.
