On a recent afternoon, Nick Baldauf was dragging an 11-square-foot piece of white cloth across dry leaves and dirt at Schenley Park. Baldauf, the vector control coordinator for the Allegheny County Health Department, is collecting wild ticks to study as part of a surveillance program with the state’s Department of Environmental Protection. “What we’re doing is trying to identify what’s out there, when they’re feeding and what the infection rates of these ticks are,” he said.

New research from the University of Pittsburgh could help scientists develop the next generation of mRNA vaccines to be more effective and less expensive to produce. A study published this week in NPJ Vaccines found that a new type of mRNA vaccine could more easily adapt to protect against constantly evolving viruses such as COVID-19 and the bird flu.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration has launched a new initiative to make menstrual products available for free in 68 state parks, just ahead of the busy summer season. The products, including tampons and sanitary pads, are now stocked in park offices, visitor centers and environmental education centers at participating parks.
