The new Pope is expected to emerge soon onto the balcony overlooking St Peter’s Square, when his given name and papal name will be revealed. The cardinal electors will also appear on the loggia of St Peter’s Basilica when the announcement of the 266th successor of St Peter is made.

Pope Francis’ encyclical on the Sacred Heart of Jesus is “a testimony written on his heart and offered to the hearts of all”, the Archbishop of Westminster has said. Cardinal Vincent Nichols said Dilexit Nos, published last Thursday, was an invitation to “anyone who is broken hearted, or feeling empty of heart, or yearning for love, or filled with the joy of a loving heart”.

The Vatican and the Chinese government renewed their Provisional Agreement on the Appointment of Bishops for a further four years. A statement from the Holy See on 22 October said this followed “the consensus reached for an effective application” of the agreement and “appropriate consultation and assessment”.

Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) urged the government to take new opportunities to prioritise freedom of religion. The charity said the new Labour government had an opportunity to incorporate religious freedom into its foreign policy, following the previous government’s failure to prioritise it. ACN petitioned the government to protect religious freedoms against increasing persecution worldwide at the launch of its latest Persecuted and Forgotten? report in Parliament on Tuesday.
