As one door closes, a couple of others open. Just under two weeks after the highly-disappointing 2024-25 Rutgers men’s basketball season came to an end, the transfer portal window opened on Monday. The 30-day period marking a key stretch for the Scarlet Knights — and every other Division I team in the country — to build their roster for next season. Across campus, the Rutgers football team prepares to begin spring camp following its up-and-down 2024 season last fall.

When the melee started across the gymnasium, Jennifer Trexler’s motherly instincts took over. Her mission was to pull her son away from trouble, so she made a beeline for the bleachers, where a brawl was erupting and spiraling into chaos. Words were exchanged and punches were thrown. Police officers charged in, broke up the fighting, made arrests and hauled out two combatants in handcuffs in the ugliest scene New Jersey high school wrestling has witnessed in several years.

Rutgers ended its disappointing regular season on a positive note. The Scarlet Knights (15-16, 8-12) defeated Minnesota in overtime on Senior Day. In the final game of his college career, five-star freshman Dylan Harper led the Scarlet Knights with 22 points on 8-of-19 shooting, scoring 6 of his team’s first 8 points in the extra period to ensure he left Jersey Mike’s Arena for the final time with a win.

No one was going to stop Anthony Knox from getting his moment to celebrate his place in New Jersey wrestling lore. Not sportsmanship. Not legal action and not anything or anyone in Boardwalk Hall, where Knox turned the famed arena into his own personal palace Saturday during an afternoon filled with celebration in Atlantic City. When the final whistle blew, applause and a standing ovation poured in as Knox got his hand raised and became the fifth wrestler in state history to win four state titles.

There were no boos. The applause was tame. In the crowd, Anthony Knox sat beside his father with little to no attention, just two rows from the mats, two weeks after the two were led away from Collingswood High in handcuffs. One fan came for a selfie. The rest of the day seemed restful, painless and hidden in anonymity — exactly how the embattled high school wrestler would want his opening rounds of competition to unfold.
