Tom Fitzgerald wasn’t going to answer the question. To be fair, the Devils general manager couldn’t answer the question without getting fined for tampering, or even worse than putting the dent in his wallet, potentially getting his fan base’s hopes up and failing to deliver. But, hey, we had to ask. This was not some pie-in-the-sky, only-in-fantasy-hockey trade rumor, after all.

WANTED: Dynamic, front-facing executive to lead a Big Ten athletic department that is underperforming and swimming in debt. Must be a proven problem solver with a realistic vision for how to elevate a collection of teams that lacks the resources of its higher-profile competition. A working knowledge of New Jersey is preferred but not required. And, uh, did we mention that the last four people to hold this position got fired? It might be one of the toughest jobs in all of big-time college sports.

Rutgers has officially begun looking for an athletic director. The school announced last week that it has launched its search for a permanent replacement for Pat Hobbs, who abruptly resigned from his post in mid-August before an investigation into an inappropriate, consensual relationship with one of the school’s coaches.

Rutgers has retained a search firm and formed an advisory committee to finally begin the process of hiring a new athletic director, the university announced on Tuesday. The university has retained TurnkeyZRG, one of the most prominent search firms, to lead the process. Rutgers has been without a permanent athletic director since Patrick Hobbs resigned this summer before an investigation into an inappropriate, consensual relationship with one of the school’s coaches.

The 2024-25 Devils: Well, what the $#%$#@ did you expect would happen? As playoff slogans, it isn’t exactly something you’d want to slap on a billboard outside the Prudential Center. But after a 5-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 4 of this first-round series moved them to within one game of elimination, that pretty much was the postgame message from the team’s frustrated head coach.
