Minister to bring housing development report to Cabinet

The Minister for Housing James Browne will bring a report to Cabinet this morning from the Land Development Agency on its latest assessment of the potential for housing development on public lands this year. This LDA first provided such a report for Government in 2023. It breaks down publicly owned sites into how much investment would be required on them to develop housing, from least constrained, to moderately and significantly constrained.

Tánaiste Simon Harris will update the Cabinet this morning on his engagement with EU trade ministers in Luxembourg yesterday, where he said there was unity on the need for a firm but proportionate response to US President Donald Trump's tariffs. Mr Harris will travel to Washington later for a series of meetings with congressional figures and senior administration representatives, including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

New standing orders in the Dáil mean that the Regional Independent group, of which Michael Lowry is a member, will be able to ask questions of the Taoiseach Micheál Martin for the first time. Deputy Lowry said last night's Dáil vote of confidence in Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy was a significant victory for democracy. The Dáil voted confidence in the Ceann Comhairle by a substantial majority - 96 votes to 71.

The Tánaiste Simon Harris will hold a series of meetings with European counterparts ahead of US President Donald Trump's expected tariffs announcement on Wednesday. The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade is due to hold calls with the Dutch Trade Minister Reinette Klever and the Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. Mr Harris is then expected to host the Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić-Radman in Dublin.
Minister to allocate €436m for social housing needs

The Minister for Housing James Browne is to allocate €436m for social housing needs this year. This includes capital funding allocations of €325m to be used by local authorities for the second-hand social housing acquisitions programme. €111m has also been allocated for 82 new social housing projects which will provide over 1,300 newly built homes - delivered over the period 2025 to 2027. This €111m figure comes from a €450m for social and affordable housing fund announced by Government last month.

Defence Forces to avail of state-of-the-art body armour

Defence Forces personnel will be able to avail of a new state-of-the-art body armour, with supplies due to arrive before the end of the year. Tánaiste and Minister for Defence Simon Harris says his department has ordered more than 6,000 units, at a cost of €16.5m, which will significantly enhance the force protection provided to Irish soldiers. It was designed in-house by the Defence Forces Ordnance Corps and will be known as Individual Modular Body Armour System, or IMBAS.
Poll suggests support for FF and SF is level

Support for Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin is tied at 22%, a new opinion poll suggests. The Red C survey for the Business Post also indicates a drop in support for Fine Gael. The poll finds that Fianna Fáil is up two points to 22%. However, Sinn Féin is down a point to also stand at 22%. Fine Gael is down three points and stands at 17%. The Social Democrats are unchanged at 7% while Labour is also unchanged on 4%. Independent Ireland remains on 4% while People Before Profit-Solidarity is unchanged on 3%.
