Ironically, Donald Trump's attacks on wind turbines could hasten the day when we stop burning coal, oil, and gas. Trump is also less than enthusiastic about solar energy, the other main green source. But his special vendetta against wind power will increase investments in solar. The economics of green energy have been rapidly changing. An older way to harness the sun was "concentrated solar power" (CSP). In the past CSP was much cheaper than PV panels.

Donald Trump promised immediate benefits, much of it on “day one” — cheaper eggs, lower inflation, peace in Ukraine. The war rages on. Egg prices have increased. Inflation, fueled by tariffs, is on the way up. But stocks, including Americans’ 401(k) retirement accounts, are way down.

Donald Trump is trying to make radical changes in our society practically overnight. Even if these changes are desirable, which is debatable, it is unwise to implement them in a hurry. Steer a heavy truck around a corner at high speed and it will turn it over, destroying its cargo. The same danger exists when making abrupt changes in complex political, social and economic systems, which have immense institutional inertia. We ignore inertia at our own peril.

Do Americans who want to acquire Canada understand what we would be getting? Do they understand how much it would disadvantage Republican politicians? Few of us know much about Canada. Teaching at a Michigan college less that 75 miles from Canada, I used to poll my freshman class to determine what they knew about the world. When I asked them to name the capital of Canada, most of them couldn't! Can you name it? If so, congratulations. My students were intelligent, but just didn't know.
