The number of “bricks-and-mortar” community pharmacies in England has fallen to its lowest level in 20 years, new NHS figures show. Some 60 pharmacies shut between 31 December and 30 April this year – the equivalent to nearly four a week, a faster rate than previous months. Only 9,984 traditional pharmacies remain open in England, down from around 11,300 in 2017, causing “blackspots” across the country and forcing people to travel to neighbouring counties.

The head of the UK’s biggest nursing union has warned staff may strike again unless the Government comes up with a “significant” pay offer. At its annual congress in Liverpool, Royal College of Nursing (RCN) general secretary and chief executive, Professor Nicola Ranger, will warn ministers “not to sail too close to the wind” when it comes to announcing a pay deal and believes the situation will “escalate” if the profession is left “ailing and underpaid”.
