The need to use the bathroom resulted in one driver forcing another driver into a rollover wreck on U.S. 285 near mile marker 135, Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze reported Friday. The wreck occurred at about 7 p.m. Thursday 1 mile north of the junction with Colo. 291. According to a press release, when the sheriff and state patrol responded to the incident they found a green sedan resting on its top on the east side of the road.

The 31st annual Fourth of July kids’ fishing derby will return to Frantz Lake this year with free T-shirts, the chance to win special prizes, free hot dog lunch and time spent with family in the outdoors. The free event for kids age 13 and younger is sponsored by Collegiate Peaks Chapter of Trout Unlimited and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at Frantz Lake, followed by fishing from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. and a free hot dog lunch for contestants and their families.

After about 19 months of restoration work in Silverton, Salida’s caboose will return home this weekend, SGM senior project manager and railroad enthusiast Matt Hutson said April 30. Klinke & Lew completed the restoration at the Silverton Northern Railroad engine house in Silverton. The restoration project included refurbishing with historically correct hardware, finishes and other details, including an accurate set of wheels.

Project engineer Matt Hutson gave an update on the restoration of Salida’s historic Denver & Rio Grande Western caboose Monday along with a set of photos. The restoration project is being conducted by Klinke and Lew for the City of Salida. While the caboose will not be roadworthy, it will be historically accurate, and after completion of the project the caboose will be returned to its place at the end of F Street.

New Mexico State Police apprehended Hanme Clark, 45 of Westcliffe Tuesday following a manhunt that lasted a little more than 24 hours. Clark is accused of shooting four people, three are now deceased the other was wounded. U.S. Marshall Kirk Taylor called Custer County Sheriff Rich Smith at 2:48 p.m. and confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody near Albuquerque by NM State Police and U.S. Marshalls. The suspect is awaiting extradition to Colorado.
