A daily newspaper editor has hit back at claims by foreign secretary David Lammy that a story it published about arms sales to Israel was “clickbait.”The National first reported earlier this month that in the last quarter of 2024, the Labour Government licensed more exports of military equipment to Israel than the Tories did for all of 2020-2023 combined.

The Manchester Evening News has retained its position as the UK’s leading regional online newsbrand after topping the monthly chart for both audience and page views. According to the latest IPSOS figures, the flagship Reach title posted a 16.9pc increase in monthly unique users in April 2025 compared to the same month in 2024 with its audience now standing at 9.4m. The MEN also generated 49.8m page views during the same period, a small decrease of 2.5pc on the figure for April 2024.

Two new categories have been introduced into this year’s Media Freedom Awards with the aim of highlighting excellence in environmental journalism. Entries open for the annual Society of Editors-run contest on 9 June, with 23 categories up for grabs. They include two Ecotricity Impact Awards for Environmental Journalism, one covering national titles and the other regional newsbrands.

A county-wide magazine is celebrating its 60th birthday this month with a souvenir issue and a 60-prize giveaway. Sussex Life was originally launched in May 1965 priced two shillings and sixpence – the equivalent of 13p today – and featured articles on why Chichester Cathedral was collapsing and an infestation of death watch beetle in East Grinstead.

An iconic London weekly newspaper title has abruptly shut down after 160 years of covering the capital. The South London Press has ceased publication with the loss of six jobs, four of them editorial roles. The sudden closure comes just days after two of the biggest sports stories on its patch for years – Crystal Palace’s victory in the FA Cup Final and Charlton Athletic’s promotion to the EFL Championship.
