1 INTRODUCTION Tornadoes in the United Kingdom are typically associated with quasi-linear convective systems (QLCSs; Trapp et al., 2005), accounting for 42% of tornado days between 2004 and 2012 (Mulder & Schultz, 2015) and 52% of tornadoes between 2003 and 2012 (Clark & Smart, 2016). This association between tornadoes and QLCSs is so strong that 27% of cool-season convective lines from a 7-year climatology were associated with at least one tornado (Clark, 2013).
