House Bill 8 attempts to address six issues New Mexicans have been screaming at their legislators to correct. While the bill does make stronger penalties possible and gives judges more options in cases where criminal defendants are deemed incompetent to stand trial, it gives judges too much discretion in sentencing and does not address our catastrophic juvenile problem.

Every Sunday, I can count on the Albuquerque Journal to raise my ire. Mayor Tim Keller was the first one to irritate me. AbstractContinued efforts to build human resilience to the impacts of tornadoes require updated knowledge of tornado occurrences as well as how their occurrence characteristics may be changing in time and varying by region. We have temporally and geospatially disaggregated annual tornado reports in the United States and revealed that significant, long-term decreases in tornado days from 1960 to 2022 have occurred over the months of June through August, primarily within the Southern Great Plains.

Your (Dec. 13 column by Jeff Tucker) drew a bleak picture of any hope of new leadership, ideas and perspectives. That translates to no hope for the state improving in any category from child wellness, education and health care.

Our governor's July 4 outlandish call to have 43% electric vehicles sold in New Mexico is rife with contradictions. She must know her state Legislature, controlled by her friends and lobbyists, won't allow even one electric car dealership. Additionally, an electric vehicle is a possible second car if you live in Albuquerque, but outside of commuters who have a power connection waiting for them at work, they're not realistic in rural New Mexico.
