Introduction In the United States, nearly 1% of all newborn babies suffer from a congenital heart defect, which is the most common malformation at birth. About one of four infants is diagnosed with a critical defect and will need surgery within the first year of life (1). Pediatric cardiac surgery has achieved numerous significant advancements in the last few decades (2).
