This past spring the Kimberley Pipe Band joined a contingent of around 80 other pipers and drummers from around B.C. on a momentous journey to the Netherlands to commemorate the anniversary of the country's liberation from Nazi occupation in May of 1945. The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is urging residents to be aware and prepared after a flood watch was issued for the East Kootenay on Thursday, June 19. "The RDEK’s Flood Response Unit will be monitoring conditions through the weekend and the RDEK is encouraging residents who live in flood-prone areas to take steps to be prepared in the event the region does experience localized flooding," an RDEK spokesperson said in a Thursday press release.

The Youth Climate Corps BC (YCCBC) has launched their summer season for 2025, running programs in seven regions around the province, including the East and West Kootenay. The YCCBC program was started in 2020 by Wildsight, who still runs the East and West Kootenay crews. YCCBC and Wildsight now work collaboratively to build on their momentum and continue to offer youth in B.C. opportunities for paid, hands-on work that also serves as a means to address climate issues within their communities.
