Dede Smith's smile could light up the newsroom. The world is dimmer without herDede Smith was a constant source of light in the newsroom for the 15 years she served as the Times-Union's director of photography. The newsroom got a little dimmer when Dede left in 2018. The world got a little dimmer when Dede left it last month. The funny pages were my introduction to newspapers. I had no idea that Garfield and Snoopy would send me down a career path, but here we are. The comics were the only section I was interested in during my earliest newspaper-reading years when I was probably still too young to even understand the humor. Except Marmaduke. Since I moved to Jacksonville in 2015, I've been proud to associate myself with the journalism produced by my colleagues at the Times-Union. Last year, that pride grew when I became executive editor and got the chance to lead this newsroom full of talented, thoughtful journalists. Local journalists are essential to the communities they serve. If I didn't firmly believe that, I wouldn't be doing this job.
