The Trust has completed important work to help conserve the habitats of aquatic invertebrates, ensure they are suitable for the species to thrive in, and safeguard their future at Castle Fraser, one of the few habitats in northern Scotland that supports the rare northern damselfly and azure damselfly, the former being one of the Trust’s priority species.

The picnic cottage in woodlands near Linn of Quoich on Mar Lodge Estate, close to Braemar, has been restored to its former glory, with contractors having completed the building work this autumn. Moxon Architects helped the Trust develop the restoration work plans early last year. It was well received by Aberdeenshire Council’s planning department, with listed building consent granted in September 2023.

The seven-week Workforce for the Future project saw the P7 Kincaidston Primary School class take part in a series of workshops at Robert Burns Birthplace Museum and Burns Cottage to learn more about Robert Burns‘ life, work, and the Scots language used within it, as well as his importance to Scotland and his impact on the economy. Along with discovering more about the national bard, the class also learned about the staff contributing to running the museum and cottage.

Our nature conservation team trialled the use of a drone for the first time at Ben Lomond to assist with surveying mountain willow scrub, one of the six priority habitats outlined in our Plan for Nature. The Plan for Nature provides a framework and focus for the Trust’s nature conservation efforts and outlines our actions to care for mountain willow scrub habitats.
