    When the First World War began in 1914, Prague was the third-largest city in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Four years later it was the capital of an independent nation-state, the Czechoslovak Republic. Yet Prague did not experience fighting, and many of its citizens woke up on October 29, 1918 – the day after independence – to a new world that seemed strikingly similar to the old one.

    Our food security deserves more attention On 16 May 2023, a long-awaited “Farm to Fork” food summit was convened by the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, at No 10 Downing Street. As reported in the UK media, guests included supermarket giants, farmers’ representatives, and food and retail groups. The government’s aim in holding this summit was ostensibly to boost “cooperation across the supply chain” and to support “the food sector’s resilience”.
