On the heels of President Trump’s election win and the executive orders he signed in the days after his inauguration, some companies have publicly rejected or embraced their diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. Corporations such as Walmart and McDonald’s, announced changes to their DEI initiatives, by removing language tailored to diversity or scaling back their involvement in racial equity programs. While others, like Costco and Microsoft, reaffirmed their commitments to DEI.

Clinicians at Boston Medical Center have been thinking a lot about one question: What is the emotional impact of racism? Oppression, they say, can disconnect people from their families, communities, ancestors, and even themselves. So BMC worked with four churches in Roxbury to pilot a Black wellness group called Reconnect to help patients understand and handle the mental impacts of racism.

When the First World War began in 1914, Prague was the third-largest city in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Four years later it was the capital of an independent nation-state, the Czechoslovak Republic. Yet Prague did not experience fighting, and many of its citizens woke up on October 29, 1918 – the day after independence – to a new world that seemed strikingly similar to the old one.
