Steve Gallager, a local journalist under the same umbrella as The Standard publications, moved to Niagara Health communications from his positian as a regional managing editor for The Niagara Falls Review and Sun Media's Niagara-South region. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2019, and when he was no longer able to work, he became a fierce advocate for the Walk to End ALS, participating in it, raising funds and spreading the word about ALS Canada. His death from ALS on May 21 left many in mourning.

Family members, employees and former employees along with regulars of Silks Country Kitchen gathered at the Virgil restaurant Monday to celebrate its 30 years of success under the ownership of the Dempsey family.
Long-time regulars will remember Virginia Dempsey, who passed away in 2009. She and her husband Randy took it over from Eleanor Strickland in 1995.

A radio station called it “misleading.” Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa called it “confusing” for residents, leading to a town statement trying to clear up that confusion.
The statement refers to “a recent advertisement” published in a Niagara-on-the-Lake newspaper regarding a proposed development on the former hospital site, property still owned by the town since it was purchased from Niagara Health for $3.5 million.

The Shaw Festival has announced a $150 million expansion plan on the neighbouring Parks Canada property and the former long-term care building that was operated by the Niagara Region.
A news release explains the “Movement for Real Human Connection” is a mission “that will transform The Shaw into a centre for communication, creativity and curiosity, said Monday’s announcement.

An ice boom pontoon that drifted from Lake Ontario, coming to rest in the sand just off the beach in Niagara-on-the-Lake, has been retrieved.
The 30-foot hunk of steel, which ways almost 4,000 pounds, had been in the water just in a few feet from the beach at the end of Firelane 2, and by late last week had washed up right on the beach.
It was removed by Josh Stack of Shoreline Innovations Marine Towing And Salvage.
