Feilding High School's hall became a woolshed this week as the school held its own version of the iconic Golden Shears shearing championships. This year's interhouse shearing and woolhandling championships at Feilding had a professional atmosphere with commentary from Danniverke commentator Tuma Mullins.

Stocks of a pinky lilac rose to mark the centenary of the national organisation Rural Women are two thirds sold already. The Mangamahu-Fordell branch of Rural Women New Zealand commissioned a nearby nursery to breed the new variety for its 100 years. The floribunda rose displays clusters of soft hued blooms above a bushy growing plant with mid-green foliage. Committee member Clare Adkins said it was special.

Dairy farmers basking in a windfall season are in for more good news when Fonterra unveils what may be a record opening forecast for next season. The co-operative will release its third quarter update on Thursday with two key numbers to be released. Fonterra will report on how the current season's milk price is shaping up, that's sitting already at a record midpoint of $10 per kilogram of milk solids ($10/kgMS).

Skyrocketing butter prices have forced a commercial bakery in the dairy heartland of Southland to scour the global market for cheaper alternatives. Kaye's Bakery in Invercargill sells belgian biscuits, afghans and other sweet treats in supermarkets and dairies nationwide, often using butter from Australia to make its products. Luella Penniall owns the family business started by her parents Lois and Evan in the 1970s. She orders in 10 tonnes of butter at a time.
