    The city of Palestine will hold a runoff election for the District 2 Councilmember seat on Saturday, June 7, according to City Manager Teresa Herrera. With 100 votes, incumbent Ava Harmon received 49% of the vote to Slyvia Brown’s 45% with a total of 92 votes.     Billy Meazell III, of Pert, is headed back to race in Australia in the 50 lapper and 100 lapper at the Alexander Speedway. Meazell said this is the 50th anniversary for the 100 lapper. During Meazell’s last trip to the land down under, a documentary titled “Billy Down Under” was filmed and featured racing, learning about Australia and making new friends and fans. The documentary can be viewed on raceon.com.

    It’s a longstanding tradition for the Slocum community to take their moms out for barbecue on Mother’s Day weekend to the Slocum Fire Department’s annual barbecue and auction. The year will be the SVFD’s 48th annual barbecue fundraiser – but it’s not just a one-day event. It’s three days of barbecue and community fun. Once those volunteers get started cooking, locals start stopping by to see what’s ready to eat.
