Australia’s southeast looks set to be lashed with heavy rain and severe winds as a low-pressure system moves in. Following a temporary reprieve of warm weather, a rain band is set to spread from South Australia into Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT over the next few days. Sky News Weather meteorologist Rob Sharpe said the change will be “significant” after a touch of warmth on Thursday.

Russia on Wednesday battled a major cross-border incursion from Ukraine for a second day, the most serious attack on Russian territory by Kyiv's forces in months that prompted both countries to evacuate several thousand civilians. A local state of emergency was introduced in Russia's Kursk region on Wednesday evening, 36 hours after Ukrainian soldiers, tanks and armoured vehicles stormed into the western border region.

A Danish court on Wednesday handed a Polish man a four-month prison sentence and ordered him deported for punching the country's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in June. The 39-year-old, who Danish authorities have ruled cannot be named in the media, was immediately apprehended after the assault on June 7 in a Copenhagen square.
