    If anyone at Mountain View High dares to question Olivia Backholm’s excuse for missing the start of the school year, the senior has plenty of proof that, yes, she was competing in Finland’s F17 national track and field championships Aug. 11-13. Along with the photos she posted on Instagram of her running in the 1,500- and 3,000-meter races, Backholm has physical evidence – the shiny silver medal she won in the longer event. “That was really cool,” the Los Altos resident said.

    Six matches into the season, the Mountain View High girls volleyball team hasn’t lost a set. “We’re off to a good start so far,” said coach Dave Winn, whose Spartans swept Santa Clara in Thursday’s season opener and won all their matches at Saturday’s St. Francis-Watsonville Tournament in straight sets. Mountain View was tested in the tourney final – the squad faced “a scrappy, energetic Crystal Springs Uplands team,” Winn said – winning the second and final set 25-23.

    Don’t expect coach Mike Garrity to make any bold declarations about this year’s Los Altos High football team. Although optimistic about the season that awaits the Eagles, he’s not looking too far ahead. “I don’t know,” he said when asked about expectations for 2023. “It’s week to week, game to game.”The first week is here: Los Altos is scheduled to host Monte Vista Christian at 3 p.m. Saturday in non-league play.
