In Slankard’s case, she wasn’t alive when the Beatles played on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964; her introduction to the Fab Four came via a VHS copy of the movie Help! in the early ’90s. “I was about 10 years old, and my dad checked out Help! from the library,” says Slankard, who grew up in Tracy.

The acclaimed artist, whose works are collected by celebrities such as Madonna, Jack Nicholson, and Barbra Streisand, made a strong impression on Rubio when she saw an exhibition at age 21. “I was instantly fascinated with her sensual connection to both women and men,” says Rubio, an Orinda resident.

Adam Plantinga’s day job is working as a patrol sergeant with the San Francisco Police Department in the Mission District, but in his free time the Lamorinda resident writes about cops and crime. After publishing two nonfiction books about police work, Plantinga wrote his first novel, The Ascent, a prison-set thriller that was released earlier this year to rave reviews. The book’s rights have already been acquired for a TV series, and Plantinga’s second novel is on the way.
