Existing Visual Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (vSLAM) approaches that offload the complex self-localization computations from mobile robots over a wireless network to edge computing are limited to static offloading, i.e., the offloaded computation tasks are offloaded permanently.

Three Dimensional Networks (3D Networks) architecture, incorporating terrestrial, aerial, and satellite communication layers, offers improved connectivity, reduced latency, and extended application coverage to rural and mountainous areas. The extended coverage and the onboard computing resources of flying nodes benefit industrial Internet of things (IIoT) applications, connecting remote factories with edge computing facilities.

In recent years, Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms have gained popularity in the field of robotics for generating maps of environments. This paper presents a novel approach for generating 3D maps of environments visited by a Boston Dynamics robot dog named Spot. Five stereo cameras mounted on the robot dog capture images that are transmitted to a remote machine that generates 3D maps of the environment in real-time.

Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) systems have their numerous applications in robotics and autonomous driving. Computational offloading enables the computationally demanding Visual SLAM systems to run on hardware-constrained mobile devices, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs). The offloading of SLAM modules to a central server also enables cooperative collaboration between multiple mobile devices.
