The Chase Sapphire Lounge in San Diego is officially opening its doors to travelers Friday, Dec. 6 – the bank's sixth lounge since opening its very first location in Boston (BOS) last spring. We were invited to take a first look at the lounge yesterday and I can say, without a doubt, this will be a game-changer for San Diegans. The 10,000-square foot space is a major improvement over other options at the airport – including an undersized Delta Sky Club and a fairly basic Aspire Lounge.

Among the hundreds of airline frequent flyer programs out there, All Nippon Airways (ANA) Mileage Club should easily crack the top five. Booking a flight with your airline miles isn't as simple as paying cash: You need to find award availability to actually book those seats with miles … and that's not always a sure thing. But beyond scouring through airline sites on your own to find the flights you want, there are a handful of tools that can help you with this difficult task. Some of these award search tools are free (or have free versions), while most require a paid subscription for the best results.

Redeeming frequent flyer miles sounds like your ticket to free flights. That's not quite the case: You'll always have to pay a bit (or maybe even a lot) in cash in addition to your hard-earned miles when booking an award ticket. Out-of-pocket costs range wildly from a flat $5.60 tax bill on a one-way domestic flight to nearly $2,000 or more in cash for some international business and first class award tickets – yes, even after forking over hundreds of thousands of miles.
