AbstractBackground: The global spread of antibiotic resistance presents a significant threat to human, animal, and plant health. Metagenomic sequencing is increas- ingly being utilized to profile antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in various environments, but presently a mechanism for predicting future trends in ARG occurrence patterns is lacking.

AbstractActivated sludge is the centerpiece of biological wastewater treatment, as it facilitates removal of sewage-associated pollutants, fecal bacteria, and pathogens from wastewater through semi-controlled microbial ecology. It has been hypothesized that horizontal gene transfer facilitates the spread of antibiotic resistance genes within the wastewater treatment plant, in part because of the presence of residual antibiotics in sewage.

NEWS AND VIEWS 17 April 2024 A technique called surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy can detect tiny quantities of compounds in solution, but has been difficult to use for quantitative analysis. A digital approach involving nanoparticles suggests a way forward. Detecting trace quantities of substances in complex aqueous media, such as river water, sewage and treated drinking water, can be like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack.
